Mekong River – Integrated
River Basin Management
Mekong River is the longest river in South East Asia
region, running through crossing China, Myanmar,
Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and southern Vietnam. The
basin encompasses a wide vast range of geographic
and climatic zones; as a result, it is endowed with
diverse and abundant natural resources. The water
irrigates large tracts of forest and wetlands that
support the livelihood of approximately 70 million
inhabitants and sustain key social, economic and
cultural values of the locals.Accurate and reliable
data is needed for decision-makers to make informed
decisions in watershed and river basin planning,
especially involving a trans-boundary resource.
Significant amount of work along the Mekong River
has engaged the use of geospatial data and satellite
imageries to assess the impacts of land cover
change, infrastructure development and climatic
variations within the basin. The seminar will discuss
case studies on geospatial technology’s contribution
towardseffective development and management of
Mekong River to improve quality of life in the region
and maintain its vital ecosystems. Some of the
segments to be covered:-
Agriculture and irrigation
- Basin planning
- Environmental health
- Fisheries
- Flood and drought
- River transportation
